'The Many Deaths of Norman Spittal'
Norman Spittal is a tortured soul, an insignificant non-entity more sinned against than
sinning.
He first appeared in 'Duck Soup'in the mid-eighties. Then in 1995 his adventures were published in
book form by Insect Publications. Last year, I finished work on 156 short animated 'Normans' in
association with
Bob Godfrey Films. These are being shown on MTV and the Paramount Comedy Channel. You can buy 'The
Many Deaths of Norman Spittal' from the online shop.
Big Fat Sleepy Cat
This is my new book published this year by Powerfresh.
The idea for
the book came from seeing my wife Elaine's
two cats lounging about while I was working on the storyboards for 'Norman Spittal'. Sketching
sleeping cats was a welcome antidote to the rigours of torturing Norman. I think it shows in the
finished work which I drew up in a very fast loose style.
This
book is available from the online shop.
'Cubes'
This idea was prompted by the huge craze for 'Rubik Cubes' in the early eighties. This
collection was published as a 98 page cartoon book by Virgin Books which is now sadly (for me)
out of print.
This is a selection of my personal favourites.
'One Small Step For a Gentleman'
In mid-1985, I got an idea for a book about the (then) imminent flight
of a British astronaut on board the Shuttle Challenger.
I thought it'd be amusing to create a character, a typically English upper class twit, and see
how he would function in the harsh environment of space with two US astronauts.
I put together a manuscript and sent it off to publishers. After a number of rejections
(one publisher who told me to "make him Irish then we might look at it"), I finally
got lucky with Grafton.
I completed the book, delivered the finished artwork, checked the proofs and then on January 28
1986 the Challenger exploded.
Obviously, the book was never released and a British astronaut has to this day still not been
launched into space on a US Shuttle.
These are just a few gags from the book which have never been published before.
