New!Mister Bignose
These strips first appeared in the pages of 'Oink!', the 'anarchic' kids comic published in the eighties.
I had never worked in comics before and I found the experience both challenging and enjoyable. I did a number of characters for Oink!, amongst them Birp the Alien, Jimmy the Cleaversmith and Hector Vector and his Talking T-Shirt.
For Mister Bignose, I would give myself a maximum of ten minutes to come up with an idea then draw it up. Sometimes it showed. Here are some of my favourites.
And yes, Mister Bignose does look a lot like Norman Spittal. Except his nose is bigger.

Cecil
The Daily Express asked me to do a 'funny animal' type cartoon strip. The result was Cecil the Coypu. Coypus, for those who have never heard of them, are huge rats the size of Bull Terriers. I was fortunate enough to see one, lying dead on the side of a Suffolk country road and was suitably impressed and inspired.
Cecil ran for a couple of years in the mid-eighties. Eventually he was pushed out to make more space for the horoscopes page.
Here are some of my favourite Cecils from that period.
